i want this

This is an 18th century trunk from Tibet. It has been crafted with opaque water color, gilding, gesso and metal on cloth on wood. I love the detail, the muted colors and this pieces quiet tranquility. I would love to make something like this.
This is a pair of decorated fingernail protectors, made out of silver, from China in the 19th century. This was a very interesting piece, because I didn't even know things like this existed, but I do like the concept of wearable art.

light BUB my Papa would say

This piece is called "Light Bulb" by Jasper Johns, it is a lead relief. When I first saw this piece I wondered what the heck it was and how the artist created it. It looks very subtle and yet strong at the same time. He made this for a print shop in L.A. and it was originally made to be embossed in paper.

solid gold...not really.

This piece is called Rotating Sphere with Interior Space by Arnaldo Pomodoro. It caught my eye because I thought it was very weird. It was made in 1967, out of bronze and it was common during the time to make representational art after the war.

skull

This piece is called "After Many Days" by Thomas Hart Benton. I love the warm feel of the colors, contrasting with the skull in the lower left corner. It is tempera and oil on canvas board and it was made in 1940! So he made the whole skull thing cool before it was cool.

dancer

This was a painting I saw at the museum that I was immediately impressed with! It is huge and apparently done entirely by candlelight. Gainsborough painted this piece of a ballerina named "Giovanna Baccelli" and this is the title. He idealized the landscape in the background to make the painting look "fancy". Good to know they were doing that kind of thing way back in 1782. It is oil on canvas and it was made in Britian.

Jealous

I am very jealous of this dress, absolutely gorgeous. I wish I couldve worn something like this to my prom. It was made in 1775-85 in England and is made out of silk. I saw this at the San Diego Museum of Art. This classical style of dress is very inspiring to me.

suckatlife.com

Using the fantastic site stumble upon i found this site. It is the site of Lawrence Yang. I am starting to notice what I like more specifically about artwork. If nature is involved...I usually dig it. And Lawrence Yang's pieces usually incorporate nature. Also, the name of the website "suckatlife.com" is hilarious, especially because on the site it says "because we all suck at life. well, sometimes." He does everything from prints to ink and watercolor to drawings to digital art...and they are all very different. My favorite would have to be the ink and watercolor. I chose a piece (my favorite) called "Sitting" and it is ink, watercolor and gouache on paper, and is 12'' by 9'' which can be seen here .
I like it because it is calming because of the blue color and the extremely subtle value shifts that are made possible by water color. And also how tiny the little bear is near the center, he is the topic of the piece and yet he is not completely on display. Brilliant. His website can be found here.

wait whaaattt?

While I was looking up information about my last post, I stumbled upon this artist, and I fell in love. I feel I have no choice but to meet the man who created these pieces. They are all so bright, beautiful, innovative and eye-catching. His name is Archan Nair, and he is from New Delhi and has been featured in advertisements.

The piece I chose is called Home...it was for a project called Gaia 10. This is a project which has artists coming together to capture the beauty found in nature through art; the idea is to raise awareness for climate change. This is mixed media, i believe he does most of this with photoshop. When i found this out, part of me died inside. I love that it looks somewhat like a watercolor. It would have a different feel without the negative space left by the "brush marks" I like how some of the colors overlap the outlines. I like the diagonal movement of the piece and also the unity of it, created by the colors he used.

the air of the times

So, I was at work, closing in the cosmetics department after a long day of trying to sell perfumes, when I noticed this box in the corner labeled "L'air du Temps"...

It had 2 doves on it, somewhat like the doves I am using in the tessellations project. The colors definitely caught my eye and I wondered to myself, who thought to put these doves on this box? where did this design come from? what does this stuff smell like? Because if its as magical as 2 doves then I definitely want some!

It is 2 white doves on a yellow box, it is hard to find the artist or the medium, but I am pretty sure it is ink on a yellow box. I am not sure how this is processed. Another thing i noticed is that the image does not wrap around. it stops on the front panel, which is hard to believe and intriguing.
